July 2012

On 26 July the Council adopted resolution 2062 renewing the mandate of UNOCI until 31 July 2013. On 18 July the Special Representative briefed the Council and said “it is important that the UN continue to play its supportive role to assist the government’s efforts to stabilise the security situation, protect civilians, restore state authority, promote reconciliation, and undertake post conflict development assistance.”

June 2012

On 8 June the Council issued a press statement condemning the attack by unknown militia fighters which killed seven peacekeepers from Niger and eleven others in the southwest of Côte d’Ivoire. That same day the head of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations briefed the Council on the killings.

May 2012

Council members visited the Côte d’Ivoire-Liberia border on 22 May during their mission to West Africa. Briefing the Council on the visit on 31 May, the Deputy Permanent of France noted that the field visit to western Côte d’Ivoire was “a turning point” in the trip.
