    The Council plans to visit Côte d'Ivoire on 19 June as part of a regional trip for relationship-building with regional organisations, in particular the African Union. In late June the Council is expected to renew the mandate of the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) which expires on 30 June.

    By 15 May the Council will receive recommendations from the Secretary-General on the UN's role in supporting the peace process in Côte d'Ivoire. Discussions are expected to focus on how to help implement the recent Ouagadougou peace agreement and, more broadly, on the degree of international involvement in the process leading to the elections.

    Following the agreement signed on 26 March between Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo and Forces nouvelles leader Guillaume Soro providing for Soro's appointment as interim prime minister, the Council is expected to adopt a new resolution amending its previous resolutions on the peace process in Côte d'Ivoire to bring them into conformity with the Ouagadougou agreement signed between the parties on 4 March.

  • A Council meeting on cross-border issues in West Africa is currently scheduled for 16 March. The format, either closed consultations or a public debate, is still being discussed.  The meeting is expected to focus on the long overdue report of the Secretary-General on cross-border issues in West Africa, which was only circulated to me

    The Secretary-General's report on the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) is due on 5 March. The Council is expected to review progress in the dialogue between Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo and the rebel Forces Nouvelles leader Guillaume Soro. A visit by the Council to Côte d'Ivoire may be discussed, but wider action seems unlikely.

    In January, the Council is expected to renew the mandates of the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) and the French Licorne forces until 31 October 2007. Both mandates expire on 10 January.

    At press time, a draft resolution sponsored by France and extending the transitional period in Côte d'Ivoire is being discussed by Council members. Because the current transitional period ends on 31 October, the resolution is expected to be adopted sooner rather than later.

    In October, the Council will receive recommendations from the African Union on the future of the peace process in Côte d'Ivoire. The AU is expected to receive proposals from the Economic Community of West African States on 4 October and from the International Working Group, which is the body in charge of following the peace process.

    The next Secretary-General's report is expected to confirm that there has been insufficient progress in implementing the roadmap, established by the Council, for the elections to be held as scheduled on 31 October.

    The Council will keep under review prospects for holding the elections as scheduled on 31 October but final conclusions will probably not be drawn until September. Formal action in the form of further targeted sanctions is likely if the obstruction of the voter-identification process by supporters of President Laurent Gbagbo continues.

    The Council will consider the Secretary-General's report on the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) due in the first half of July. There will be a discussion on the progress made toward the implementation of the roadmap to the 31 October elections as well as an anticipated recommendation for an additional reinforcement of UNOCI's troop level.

    The Secretary-General's quarterly report on the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) is expected to draw the Council's attention again to the need for an increase in the number of troops and police units in Côte d'Ivoire.

    In early March the Council will review the situation in Côte d'Ivoire in light of a briefing from the Secretariat. The future of an infantry company from the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) to Côte d'Ivoire, deployed in February, will also arise and these discussions may lead to a review of the tasks and the troop level of the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) later in the month. A new resolution is possible.
