    In December, the Security Council is expected to renew the 2713 Al-Shabaab sanctions regime, including the provision for maritime interdiction, which expires on 15 December. In addition, the Council will decide on the mandate of the Panel of Experts supporting the 2713 Al-Shabaab Sanctions Committee, which expires on 15 January 2025.   The Council is also expected to decide on the successor mission to the African Union (AU) Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), whose mandate expires on 31 December. In line with resolution 2748 of 15 August, which most recently extended ATMIS’ mandate, the Secretary-General, jointly with the AU Commission Chairperson, submitted his report on the overall design of the follow-on mission and a range of options for financing it, on 26 November. In a 13 November letter, the Secretary-General requested additional time to finalise consultations on the report, which was due by 15 November. Responding to this, the Council extended the deadline until 30 November.

    In October, the Security Council will hold a briefing, followed by consultations, to discuss the situation in Somalia. In addition, the Security Council is expected to renew the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), which expires on 31 October. In accordance with resolution 2748 of 15 August, which reauthorised the African Union (AU) Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) until 31 December, the Secretary-General is expected to provide a comprehensive update by 11 October on the overall mission design and financing options for the proposed successor mission to ATMIS. The Security Council is expected to hold a private meeting to discuss this update with the AU and Somalia, with the participation of the UN Secretariat. The Chair of the 2713 Al-Shabaab Sanctions Committee, Ambassador Kazuyuki Yamazaki (Japan), is also expected to brief on the work of the committee.

    In August, the Security Council is expected to extend the authorisation of the African Union (AU) Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which expires on 12 August.  Council members are expected to receive a written update from the Secretary-General by 31 August on the modalities and timeline for the transition of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) to the UN Country Team, as requested by the Council in a 16 May letter.   The mandate of UNSOM is set to expire on 31 October and was most recently renewed by resolution 2705 of 31 October 2023.
