    The Council in July is expected to focus its attention on the issue of sanctions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The report by the Group of Experts is due on 10 July and the discussions on the renewal of the sanctions regime and the Group's mandate by 31 July. The Council will also have the report of its mid-June mission to Kinshasa.

    The Council will pay close attention to post-election developments and potential violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in December. The new president is expected to be sworn in during the month. A Secretariat briefing is expected.At the time of writing, the EU force (EUFOR RD Congo) is set to expire on 30 November, with a phased withdrawal in December. Renewal is not likely, but a serious deterioration of security could lead to reconsideration and also prompt a Council statement.

    The Council will be following developments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) closely. A Council statement, particularly in the event of further violence following the 29 October election, is likely. The mandate of the EU mission in the DRC (EUFOR RD Congo) expires on 30 November. Renewal is not likely to be sought. But a serious deterioration of security conditions may lead to reconsideration.

    The Council is expected to renew the mandate of the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC), which expires on 30 September. The issue of the long-term future of MONUC will linger in the background, but is unlikely to be seriously addressed until after the presidential run-off elections in October. A simple extension of the mandate seems likely, but it is still unclear for how long.

    A Council mission will visit the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in June and reinforce the need for the 30 July elections to proceed smoothly and fairly. A briefing and a report are expected to follow.

  • The Council is expected to authorise in the next few days the deployment of an EU military mission in support for the UN Mission in the Congo (MONUC) during the elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). A formal proposal was submitted to the Council by the Secretary-General on 13 April.

    A Council mission visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in early November. The mission had two goals: reinforce the transitional process in the DRC, especially the constitutional referendum on December 18, and maintain the momentum towards the elections in June 2006; and assess the future options for the Council including the levers available such as sanctions and the need for compliance with the arms embargo in helping to secure the disarmament, reintegration and repatriation of fighters in the country.
