Insurgents backed by Rwanda and Uganda rose up against Democratic Republic of the Congo President Laurent-Desire Kabila. Zimbabwe, Namibia and Angola sent troops to assist the government.

Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency began.

1986

Museveni took power in Uganda and installed a no-party system; the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) began fighting.
