Insights on the Libya Sanctions Comittee

Council members have been working on setting up the sanctions committee on Libya called for in resolution 1970 which was adopted by the Council last Saturday, 26 February. It now looks like Portugal will chair the committee. A Note by the President of the Security Council is expected to be issued soon formalising this decision.

The new sanctions committee is expected to then quickly draw up a programme of work and guidelines for listing and delisting. Member states need to report to it by the end of June on steps taken to implement the arms embargo and travel ban on Libya as requested in resolution 1970. This resolution also asks the Committee to report to the Council on “its work for the first report” within thirty days. This is expected to take place by 28 March.
