Insights on the Informal Experts Group on Protection of Civilians and Afghanistan

The Informal Experts Group on Protection of Civilians met yesterday (Tuesday, 8 March) to discuss Afghanistan ahead of the renewal of UNAMA’s mandate. Council experts covering protection as well as the country-specific experts on Afghanistan attended the meeting. China, however, does not participate in this Experts Group.

The Core Group on Afghanistan met last week on the draft UNAMA resolution and Council members are expected to begin discussions by early next week.

The Experts Group’s discussions are expected to be conveyed to Council members who will be discussing the draft resolution early next week. The Core Group on Afghanistan met last week and its comments have been incorprorated into the draft text.

Key reports that are likely to also feed into the Council’s mandate renewal discussions are the Secretary-General’s quarterly report on Afghanistan which is expected to be published on Friday (11 March) and the UNAMA and Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission’s 2010 report on civilian casualties in Afghanistan, which came out today.
