Insights on Conflict Prevention
Tomorrow (Tuesday, 8 March), Council members will receive a briefing from the Department of Political Affairs in informal consultations. It seems the focus will be related to North Africa and the Middle East. This briefing is part of what is now becoming a regular monthly interaction between Council members and DPA on emerging issues. DPA head, B. Lynn Pascoe is expected to brief and to also cover his recent visit to Egypt, Gabon and Cameroon. The inauguration of the new UN Office in Central Africa based in Libreville, Gabon and the situation in Libya are likely to be of interest to Council members.
Council members are showing interest in a further discussion on the situation in Libya and may ask Pascoe for more information on the appointment of former Jordanian foreign minister, Abdelilah Al-Khatib, as the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Libya and the UN humanitarian assessment mission that is expected to Libya shortly.
