Insights on Peacekeeping

Next month the Council will continue with its cycle of consultations on peacekeeping which was set in motion by its August 2009 presidential statement encouraging regular discussions on peacekeeping between the Council and the Secretariat.

While it has yet to be confirmed, the most likely focus appears to be on the issue of national consent by the host country with DPKO head, Alain Le Roy, and Field Support chief, Susana Malcorra, expected to brief. There had been some suggestion earlier that the national consent discussion could focus on MINURCAT and MONUSCO as interesting case studies. However it now appears that a more general discussion is now likely.

An interesting question is whether some of the ideas arising from general thematic discussions such as this one will be applied to specific cases before the Council this year.
