Update Reports

Supplementary reports issued throughout the month on emerging or developing situations being addressed by the Security Council.

  • On 6 November, the Council is scheduled to hold an open debate on the role of regional and subregional organisations in maintaining peace and security. The debate, which will be chaired by Indonesia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. N. Hassan Wirajuda, will be held at the country's initiative in its capacity as Council president for November.

  • The Council will hold consultations in early November (at time of writing, 5 November was being considered) after a briefing by Terje Rød-Larsen, the Secretary-General's Special Envoy for implementation of resolution 1559. (Adopted in 2004, resolution 1559 focused on withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon and the factors giving rise to instability in Lebanon.)

    Update Report No. 2: Iraq

    The Council is scheduled to hold a public debate on the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) and on the Multinational Force (MNF) in Iraq on 19 October. It is anticipated that Lynn Pascoe, Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs, will brief the Council on the latest UNAMI report.

  • The Secretary-General's Special Advisor on Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, is expected to brief the Council on Friday, 5 October on his visit to Myanmar which took place from 29 September to 2 October.

  • Council members seem ready to adopt a draft resolution to establish a UN operation in Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR) and to authorise an EU military operation to provide security for civilians at risk and UN personnel. At press time, the draft was subject to final review in capitals.

  • As Council president this month, France will be convening a summit-level meeting on Africa on 25 September. French President Nicolas Sarkozy will be presiding over the meeting. The President of Ghana, current Chair of the African Union, will also participate.

    Update Report No. 3: Myanmar

    The Council will receive a briefing on 20 September from the Secretary-General's Special Advisor on Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, covering the Secretary-General's Good Offices efforts in relation to Myanmar.

  • On 21 September, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and AU Commission Chairman Alpha Konaré will host a high-level consultation on Darfur. The adoption of a communiqué is expected.

  • The Secretary-General's quarterly report on the "north-south" situation in Sudan is before the Council for consideration. Consultations are currently scheduled for Friday, 7 September.

  • As Council president this month and the current chair of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa, Congo has planned an open debate for 28 August to discuss ways in which the UN system can more effectively prevent and resolve conflict, particularly in Africa. 

  • In a letter on 8 August to the president of the Security Council, Georgia called for a meeting of the Council stating that a Russian missile had impacted in its territory on 6 August 2007. The Council has since had two informal briefings on the missile incident in Georgia.

  • On 10 August the Security Council is expected to adopt a resolution on the sanctions regime on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This follows a short rollover of the existing resolution on 31 July to enable Council members to weigh up a recent deterioration of the situation in the east of the country as well as a request from the government to modify the arms embargo.

  • The Council now has before it the formal text of a revised draft resolution on Kosovo. (Formal circulation is commonly referred to as putting the draft in "blue" - which means that the procedural requirements for putting it formally to a vote have commenced). The co-sponsors - Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, UK and the US - now have the formal option to put it to a vote.

  • The Council will consider the issue of children and armed conflict in a range of meetings in the remainder of the month. The Council is scheduled to meet on 23 July to consider the Annual Report of the Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict set up under resolution 1612.

  • Before the mandate of the United Nations Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) expires on 16 July, the Council is expected to adopt a resolution adapting the role of the UN in Cote d'Ivoire in line with the changed circumstances in the country since the signing of the Ouagadougou Political Agreement on 4 March.
