Update Reports

Supplementary reports issued throughout the month on emerging or developing situations being addressed by the Security Council.

  • On 29 April the Council is expected to be briefed by the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Lynn Pascoe, in private consultations on the situation in Zimbabwe. No formal statement or decision is expected at this stage.

  • The Chairman of the Security Council’s 1267 Committee that monitors sanctions imposed on the Taliban and Al-Qaida, Ambassador Johan Verbeke of Belgium, is expected to brief the Council in closed consultations on 24 April on nations suspected of avoiding compliance with the bans.

  • An open debate on small arms is scheduled for 25 April, the first such debate since March 2006. A report from the Secretary-General is due on 21 April. (Postscript-the report was released on 17 April) (S/2008/258).

  • On 16 April, the Council will hold a debate combining two thematic issues: UN cooperation with regional organisations and conflict prevention. The meeting will have a particular focus on Africa and will be presided over by President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa.

  • The Council is expected to be briefed in late April by the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the LRA–affected areas, former President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique, on the peace agreement between the government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), expected to be signed later this month. In the near future, the 

  • The Council is expecting a briefing on 18 March by Ibrahim Gambari, the Secretary-General’s Special Advisor on Myanmar, followed by Council consultations. He has just returned from a four day trip to Myanmar as well as earlier visits to a number of countries in the region. (In February, he met leaders in Beijing, Jakarta, Singapore and Tokyo.)

  • The Council will have a public meeting on Kosovo on 11 March followed by consultations. On 6 March, Serbia had asked for an urgent meeting to consider what it referred to as an “aggravation of the situation” in Kosovo. Serbia’s Foreign Minister, Vuk Jeremic, is expected to address the Council during the public session.

    Update Report No.2: Iran

    At press time Council members were discussing the draft of a third sanctions resolution on Iran, sponsored by France, Germany and the UK aimed at increasing pressure on Iran to suspend uranium enrichment activities.

    Update Report No. 1: Kosovo

    The Council is expected to meet on Thursday, 14 February, in response to a request from Serbia to discuss the situation in Kosovo. The meeting will be held as a closed session with Vuk Jeremic, Serbia’s Foreign Minister, participating.

  • The Security Council on 3 January 2008 decided the following elections as chairpersons of Council committees, sanctions committees, working groups, and the Council members of the Peacebuilding Commission for 2008.

  • The Council is expected to hold an open debate on Timor-Leste on 13 December. The meeting is expected to underscore the Council’s support for Timor-Leste and its ongoing concern with the fragile security situation.

  • At time of writing the Security Council is discussing a letter from Iraq seeking renewal of the mandate of the Multinational Force in Iraq (MNF-I), but only for one year.

  • The Council will hold an open debate on protection of civilians in armed conflict on Tuesday, 20 November. It seems that the Secretary-General and Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes will address the Council. Members are expected to discuss recent findings and recommendations contained in

    Update Report No. 3: Myanmar

    The Secretary-General’s Special Advisor on Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari is expected to brief the Council on 13 November on his most recent visit to Myanmar which took place from 3 to 8 November.

  • Joaquim Chissano, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA)-affected areas, will brief the Council on Tuesday, 13 November. The briefing, which is being held at Chissano's initiative, is expected to focus on recent developments in the peace talks between the Ugandan government and the LRA.
