    For most of June, action on Kosovo took place outside the Council at the G8 Summit and in bilateral and group discussions. A new draft resolution was circulated towards the end of the month, and consultations among Council members were taking place at ambassadorial level.

    The endgame in the Council over Kosovo's final status is expected in June. At press time there have been two expert-level meetings on the draft resolution circulated by the EU5 (France, the UK, Italy, Belgium and Slovakia) and US. A decision in June seems inevitable, bringing to a conclusion the debate over the report released in March by Martti Ahtisaari, the Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Future Status Process for Kosovo.

    In early May the Council is expected to consider the report from its April mission to Kosovo and move closer to deciding how to handle the report released in March by Martti Ahtisaari, the Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Future Status Process for Kosovo. Ahtisaari recommended independence for Kosovo supervised by the international community.

    Martti Ahtisaari, the Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Future Status Process for Kosovo, completed his final recommendations in late March. On 26 March, the Secretary-General transmitted Ahtisaari's final proposal to the Council along with Ahtisaari's conclusions and recommendations and his own letter supportive of both documents. In early April Ahtisaari is expected to present both documents in closed consultations of the Council.

    The final report by Maarti Ahtisaari, the Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Future Status Process for Kosovo, is expected to be transmitted to the Council during March. No Council action is expected during the month though there will be active bilateral discussions. The Council may meet on the issue in April and a draft resolution on Kosovo is likely to emerge before long.

    In the third week of September the Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Future Status Process for Kosovo, Martti Ahtisaari, is expected to brief the Council on the Kosovo status discussions at a closed meeting with some ministerial-level participation.

    In July the Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Future Status Process for Kosovo, Martti Ahtisaari of Finland, will give an assessment of talks between Belgrade and Pristina at a public meeting of the Council. No Council action is expected, but some probing questions in the Informal Consultations are likely. In September, Ahtisaari may return with an update.

    At the end of May, the Council will receive the periodic report from the Secretary-General on the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK). In June the Council will likely focus on the process of standards implementation, and perhaps discuss the ongoing decreases in the size of the mission and the future of the UN's involvement in Kosovo.

    The Security Council will review the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), the standards-implementation process and the ongoing decreases in the size of the mission. The Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Søren Jessen-Petersen, is likely to be present to brief the Council on the latest report from the Secretary-General.
