Liberia Resolution
A resolution renewing the mandate of the UN Mission on Liberia (UNMIL) was scheduled to be adopted yesterday. However, after the resolution was put in blue on 14 September, a few Council members broke silence resulting in a delay in the adoption. Following further discussions yesterday, the resolution was again put in blue and it seems that the adoption will now take place this afternoon.
It seems that the issue was that while there appears to be consensus among Council members about the need to renew the mandate, some still prefer the new mandate to be limited to eight months instead of the usual twelve months. The resolution that was placed in blue called for a renewal of the mandate for twelve months.
Also yesterday, it appears that the Secretary-General circulated a letter among Council members on the inter-mission cooperation with the UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI). It seems that the Secretary- General recommended the redeployment of three helicopters – as well as 100 police personnel and 120 military personnel – from UNOCI to UNMIL by the end of September. It is likely that the Council will need to address this issue in the coming weeks.
