Council Briefing on Kosovo
This afternoon Council members will be briefed by the Secretariat during consultations on yesterday’s incident in Kosovo. It seems that Russia requested this briefing yesterday in order to obtain more information on developments on the ground following clashes at a disputed northern Kosovo border.
The Council last had an open meeting on Kosovo on 15 September with both Kosovo and Serbia present followed by a closed meeting with both parties where customs and border police control of the boundary crossings between north Kosovo and Serbia were discussed.
Media reports indicate that 16 ethnic Serbs and four NATO peacekeepers were hurt and that NATO troops had used tear gas and rubber bullets after pipe bombs were fired. There have also been reports that NATO forces fired live ammunition.
