Sudan/South Sudan Consultations

This afternoon Council members will be briefed on Sudan and South Sudan by Under-Secretary Generals for peacekeeping and humanitarian affairs, Alain Le Roy and Valerie Amos. Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Haile Menkerios will also be present. It seems that this briefing had originally been scheduled for Thursday, 11 August, but late Friday the US requested the briefing be brought forward to Monday following the incident in Abyei last week in which four Ethiopian peacekeepers were killed.

The briefing is expected to cover the situation in Abyei, South Kordofan and Darfur. It appears that Council members are also interested in getting further input on progress between parties in Sudan and on the wider political process between Sudan and South Sudan.

It seems that no Council decision is expected. However, depending on the content of the briefings, a press statement might be a possibility.

It also seems that a separate press statement reacting to the death of a UNAMID peacekeeper on 5 August when his vehicle came under attack in south Darfur may be issued today.
