Briefing on Sudan
Council members are expecting a briefing this morning by the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Valerie Amos, and the Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Edward Mulet on the humanitarian situation in South Kordofan. It seems that France requested the briefings.
Last month the Council had been negotiating a presidential statement prompted by the violence which began in early June and may choose to revisit this. But to issue something of a more timely nature they may instead consider a press statement in response to today’s briefings.
The Council was last briefed on the humanitarian situation in Southern Kordofan on 16 June by the head of the department of peacekeeping (DPKO), Alain Le Roy and Assistant Secretary-General of the Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Catherine Bragg.
