ICTY Resolution

The council today (29 June) adopted a resolution on the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia prepared by the working group on tribunals under Portugal’s chairmanship. The resolution extends the terms of a number of permanent and ad-litem judges of the trial chamber of the tribunal until 31 December 2012. This follows a report from the President of the tribunal which contained revised projections for the completion of ongoing trials.

The resolution does not address the separate request on behalf of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) to allow for an appeals chamber judge to serve as president of the ICTR, or for an ad-litem judge to take on that position when the current president is deployed to the appeals chamber. It is unclear when the Council will address this issue, which must be resolved by the end of the year.
