Insights on Côte d’Ivoire

It looks like the Council will adopt a resolution on Côte d’Ivoire tomorrow, Friday 13 May, that both authorises a technical rollover of the UN mission in Côte d’Ivoire’s (UNOCI’s) current mandate (which expires at the end of June) to 31 July 2011, as well as extends the authorisation of the temporary transfer of troops and helicopters from the UN mission in Liberia to UNOCI for the same period.

The Secretary-General has asked the Council for a technical rollover to give more time for a UN assessment team to evaluate UNOCI’s mandate (as requested by the Council) in light of the post-election violence and peacebuilding requirements in Côte d’Ivoire.

Adoption of the resolution was delayed as it seems that it was desired to wait until members had received a separate letter from DPKO providing the Council an update on and future options regarding UNOCI/UNMIL cooperation. It is unclear how the Council might incorporate these options into what is intended otherwise to be a very short, technical resolution.
