Insights on Libya

The Council will be briefed in a formal public meeting by the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Libya, Abdelilah Al-Khatib this afternoon. This will be followed by informal consultations on Libya.

Al-Khatib was in Libya last week where he met with Mustafa Abdel Jalil, head of the rebel Transitional National Council in Benghazi and with Libyan Prime Minister Al-Baghdadi Ali Al- Mahmoudi in Tripoli.

It appears that Council members were all open to having a briefing. The only question was whether the briefing should take place in an open or closed meeting. Council members are keen to have a briefing from Al-Khatib but are also aware that his movement was restricted in Libya possibly making it difficult for him to provide a complete picture of the situation in Libya.
