Council members will be briefed at 5 pm today (Friday, 1 April) by DPKO head, Alain Le Roy, on the attack against the UN’s office in Mazar-i-Sharif in Afghanistan. Council members are then expected to discuss a press statement reacting to the attack which may be issued this evening.
A group of demonstrators, apparently protesting against the burning of the Koran by a
Florida pastor,entered the UN office and killed a number of UN staff. UNAMA has confirmed that an attack took place and that a number of UN personnel were killed. Media reports have indicated up to 20 UN staff members killed but the UN has said that the exact number is not yet clear.
