The Council is expected to hold consultations on Sudan prior to the start of voting in the Southern Sudan referendum, scheduled to be conducted for one week from 9 January. Council consultations are also expected following the end of voting. Any Council response will largely depend upon events on the ground.

In December, the Council will be briefed by the head of UN peacekeeping, Alain Le Roy, on the progress of preparations for the referenda to be held on 9 January in southern Sudan and Abyei and the situation in Darfur.

A ministerial-level meeting is expected on 16 November where the Council will be briefed on preparations for the referenda in Sudan, the situation in Darfur and progress of the Doha peace talks.

The high-level meeting on Sudan held at UN Headquarters on 24 September has focused attention on the risks over the coming months and seems likely to ensure ongoing attention in the Council as well. At press time there were indicators that the Council would visit Sudan in the first week of October.

In July the Council is expected to renew the mandate of UNAMID which expires on 31 July. Prior to that, the Council expects to receive a report from the Secretary-General. Consultations on UNMIS are also likely.

In June, the Council is expected to hold a high-level meeting on the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and the Darfur peace process with the heads of the two operations in Sudan, Haile Menkerios and Ibrahim Gambari, AU-UN Joint Chief Mediator Djibril Bassolé and former South African President Thabo Mbeki, who headed the AU Panel on Darfur.
