    In March, the Council will meet to consider the Secretary-General’s 90-day report on UNMISS and his 30-day assessment focusing on the deployment and future requirements of the RPF, obstacles to setting up the force and impediments to UNMISS in carrying out its mandate. Secretary-General António Guterres and AU High Representative for South Sudan Alpha Oumar Konaré are expected to brief the Council in a meeting chaired by UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Boris Johnson. The UNMISS mandate expires on 15 December 2017.

    In February, the Council will follow closely the situation in South Sudan. There may be a meeting to consider the Secretary-General’s 30-day assessment of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), including the deployment and future requirements of the Regional Protection Force (RPF), obstacles to setting up the force and impediments to UNMISS in carrying out its mandate. Given the gravity of the situation, other meetings could be scheduled on South Sudan during the month, depending on developments in the country. The UNMISS mandate expires on 15 December 2017.

    The Council will renew the mandate of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the authorisation for the yet-to-be deployed Regional Protection Force (RPF), before their 15 December expiration. It will also consider the Secretary-General’s monthly assessment, called for in resolution 2304, on the deployment and future requirements of the RPF, on obstacles to setting up the force and on impediments to UNMISS in carrying out its mandate. Members are anticipating a vote on a draft resolution to impose an arms embargo on South Sudan and additional targeted sanctions, although it was unclear at press time if and when this would happen.

It will consider the Secretary-General’s monthly assessment, called for in resolution 2304, on the deployment and future requirements of the Regional Protection Force (RPF), on obstacles to setting up the force and on impediments to UNMISS in carrying out its mandate. The Council will also consider the Secretary-General’s 90-day report on the implementation of the UNMISS mandate, which expires on 15 December, and the interim report of the Panel of Experts of the Sanctions Committee.

    In October, Council members are expected to hold consultations to consider the Secretary-General’s second monthly assessment on the deployment and future requirements of the Regional Protection Force, as well as obstacles to setting up the force and impediments to the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in carrying out its mandate. Members may also be interested in discussing the findings of the independent special investigation called for by the Secretary-General, “into the violence in Juba…in July 2016, and the response of the UN Mission in South Sudan.” The mandate of UNMISS expires on 15 December.
