    Update Report

    The Council expects to be briefed in informal consultations on Monday, 6 December by Vijay Nambiar, the Special Advisor to the Secretary-General, on his visit to Myanmar from 27 to 28 November. Council members were last briefed by him on 18 November following the 7 November elections and 13 November release of Aung San Suu Kyi.

    At the time of writing the Council was expected to meet this afternoon to discuss the situation in Myanmar and the implications of Aung San Suu Kyi being sentenced to a further 18 months of house arrest after an 86 day trial.

    The Council is currently negotiating a possible statement reacting to the ongoing trial of Aung San Suu Kyii. If there is agreement on language and the type of statement (i.e. press or presidential) the Council may meet 20 May.

    Monthly Forecast

    The Council is expected to ask the Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, for a briefing in the latter half of February after his visit to Myanmar (at press time his visit was expected from 31 January to 3 February). Gambari is also expected to visit other countries in the region and brief the Secretary-General (who will be in Delhi in early February) before coming back to New York in mid-February.

    The Council is expected to receive a briefing on 11 September in a closed session from Ibrahim Gambari, the Secretary-General’s Special Advisor on Myanmar. Gambari visited Myanmar from 18-23 August 2008. This is his first visit since the May national referendum which ratified the draft constitution.

    The Council has been discussing, both at the experts level and in informal consultations, the humanitarian situation in Myanmar since Cyclone Nargis struck the country on 2 May 2008.

    The Council is expecting a briefing on 18 March by Ibrahim Gambari, the Secretary-General’s Special Advisor on Myanmar, followed by Council consultations. He has just returned from a four day trip to Myanmar as well as earlier visits to a number of countries in the region. (In February, he met leaders in Beijing, Jakarta, Singapore and Tokyo.)

    The Council will receive a briefing on 20 September from the Secretary-General's Special Advisor on Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, covering the Secretary-General's Good Offices efforts in relation to Myanmar.

    The Council expects a briefing from Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari before the end of the month on his second visit to Myanmar. The briefing is expected to take place in closed informal consultations. A draft US resolution is possible but it may be tabled separately, after the briefing.

    On Friday 29 September the Council will be briefed on Myanmar by Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Ibrahim Gambari. Even though the Council has received briefings on Myanmar last year and earlier this year, this will be the first briefing with the situation in Myanmar being officially on the Council agenda. The Council took a rare procedural vote to add this item.
