    In September the Council is expected to renew the mandate of the peacekeeping operation in Liberia, UNMIL, which expires on 30 September. A briefing by Ellen Løj, the Head of UNMIL, is also expected. The Secretary-General’s progress report on UNMIL was submitted to the Council on 11 August.

    In August the Council is due to receive a report from the Secretary-General on the situation in Liberia but is not expected to formally consider it until September, prior to the 30 September expiration of UNMIL’s mandate. However, it is possible that experts will begin consultations on the issues.

    In June the Sanctions Committee on Liberia is expected to discuss a report from the Panel of Experts on the sanctions regime (i.e. arms embargo, travel bans and assets freeze). The current sanctions expire on 17 December and the mandate of the Panel of Experts expires on 20 December.

    The Council is expected to renew the mandate of the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and perhaps expand the political role to include electoral support elements as recommended in the Secretary-General’s latest report on UNMIL. It is expected to start discussions and make a decision by 30 September, when UNMIL’s annual mandate expires.

    Update Report

    On Thursday 25 June the Council will meet in closed consultations to discuss the Secretary-General’s report on the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) which was issued on 10 June. A briefing by Alain Le Roy, the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations who just visited Liberia is likely. UNMIL’s mandate expires on 30 September 2009.

    In March, the Council is expected to discuss the Secretary-General’s report on Liberia of 10 February and hear a briefing by Ellen Margrethe Løj, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General. Progress in meeting key security benchmarks and possible adjustments of the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) will be considered. Resolution 1836 renewed the UNMIL mandate until September 2009.

    In December the Council is likely to renew the current sanctions regime for Liberia. The arms embargo and travel ban imposed by resolution 1521 in 2003 (and last renewed by resolution 1792 in 2007) expire on 19 December. (The assets freeze imposed by resolution 1532 remains in force and does not require renewal).

    The Liberia Sanctions Committee is expected to receive the report of its Panel of Experts by 1 June, to assist in deliberations on the sanctions regime (arms embargo, assets freeze and travel embargo) imposed between 2003 and 2007 by resolutions 1521, 1731 and 1792. The Panel’s mandate expires on 20 June and a resolution authorising extension is likely.
