The president of the International Court of Justice, Hisashi Owada of Japan is expected to brief the Council in October. This briefing, which has been held annually since the practice was first established in 2000, normally coincides with the president’s presentation of the Court’s annual report to the General Assembly.

The Security Council and General Assembly will both hold elections for the International Court of Justice on 6 November 2008. Five judges in total will be elected to the ICJ each for a term of nine years, starting on 6 February 2009.

An open debate in the Security Council on Strengthening International Law: Rule of Law and the Maintenance of International Peace and Security is currently scheduled for 22 June.

Council members are currently negotiating a draft resolution to facilitate a hearing by the Special Court for Sierra Leone in International Criminal Court (ICC) premises and for the detention in the Netherlands of former Liberian president Charles Taylor for the purposes of his trial by the Special Court.
