    In May, the head of BINUB, Charles Petrie, will brief the Council. Municipal elections are scheduled for 21 May, presidential elections for 28 June, legislative elections for 23 July, senatorial elections for 28 July and collines (Burundi’s smallest administrative units) on 7 September. No formal Council action is expected. The mandate of BINUB expires on 31 December.

    In December the Council is expected to consider the report of the Secretary-General on the UN Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB). Renewal of BINUB’s mandate, which expires on 31 December, is expected.

    The Council is expected to consider the Secretary-General’s report on the implementation of the mandate of the UN Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB) in June. Resolution 1858, which extended the mandate of BINUB last December, requested that the report to be submitted by May. BINUB’s mandate expires on 31 December.

    In December the Council is expected to adopt a resolution renewing the mandate of the UN Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB), which expires on 31 December 2008. If negotiations between the Burundi government and the rebel Palipehutu-FNL (Palipehutu-Forces nationales de libération) are still deadlocked in December, the Council may also discuss ways of moving the process forward bearing in mind the 31 December deadline for completion of the peace process.

    The Council expects to consider the Secretary-General’s semi-annual report on the UN Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB). The mandate of BINUB does not expire until 31 December. However, because of the recent heavy fighting, the Council will be following the situation closely and a further statement is possible.

African members seem increasingly uncomfortable with the "hands off" approach of recent months. Possible formal action includes a presidential or press statement. The mandate of the UN Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB) expires on 1 January 2008.

The Secretary-General's Executive Representative for Burundi, Youssef Mahmoud, may also brief the Council. No formal action is expected, but a press statement is a possible outcome.     On Wednesday the Council is expected to adopt a resolution defining the mandate and structure of the UN Integrated Office in Burundi (Bureau Integre des Nations Unies au Burundi or BINUB). The integrated office will be set up on 1 January for a twelve month period under the leadership of the Executive Representative of the Secretary-General and will replace the current peacekeeping mission, the UN Operation in Burundi (ONUB), when its mandate expires on 31 December 2006.

    The Council is expected to consider the establishment of a United Nations integrated office in Burundi to take over from the current peacekeeping mission when its mandate expires on 31 December, as recommended by the Secretary-General in the addendum to his June report on the United Nations Operation in Burundi, published on 14 August.

    The Council is expected to extend the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Burundi (ONUB) until 31 December.The Secretary-General's proposal for an integrated UN office in Burundi to follow on from ONUB in 2007, covering security-sector reforms and human rights as well as transitional government, will also be discussed in light of the Secretary-General's report on ONUB, which is due 15 June. In this context, some discussion of a possible Peacebuilding Commission role is likely.
