Selected Security Council Resolutions
  • S/RES/2002 (29 July 2011) extended the mandate of the Monitoring Group for Somalia and Eritrea for 12 months and  requested a separate report on Eritrea.
  • S/RES/1916 (19 March 2010) extended the mandate of the Monitoring Group for Somalia and Eritrea and requested the Secretary-General to re-establish it for a period of 12 months with three additional experts. 
  • S/RES/1907 (23 December 2009) imposed an arms embargo and targeted sanctions against Eritrea.
  • S/RES/1862 (14 January 2009) demanded that Eritrea withdraw its forces to the positions of the status quo ante.

Selected Security Council Presidential Statements

  • S/PRST/2009/15 (15 May 2009) called on the Sanctions Monitoring Group to investigate reports that Eritrea had supplied arms to insurgent groups in Somalia. (It also condemned the renewed fighting by Al-Shabaab and other extremists in Somalia and demanded an immediate end to the violence.)
  • S/PRST/2008/20 (12 June 2008) called for a ceasefire between Djibouti and Eritrea.

  • S/2010/327 (22 June 2010) was a report on Eritrea’s compliance with resolution 1907.
  • S/2009/163 (30 March 2009) was the report requested by the Council in resolution 1862.
Letter from the Secretary-General
  • S/2009/163 (30 March 2009) was the Secretary-General’s response to the Council’s request in resolution 1862 for a report on the situation and the parties compliance with their obligations.

Other

  • S/2011/623 (7 October 2011) was from Eritrea to the Council calling for a lifting of the sanctions against it.
  • S/2011/617 (6 October 2011) was from Djibouti to the Council about the escape of two Djiboutian prisoners of war from an Eritrean prison.
  • S/2011/494 (4 August 2011) was from Eritrea to the Council submitting its preliminary response to the report of the Monitoring Group.
  • S/2011/434 (14 July 2011) was from Ethiopia to the Council transmitting the 4 July IGAD Assembly of Heads of Government communiqué calling for Council action against Eritrea.
  • S/2011/433 (18 July 2011) was a letter from the Sanctions Committee chair transmitting the latest report from the Monitoring Group for Somalia and Eritrea.
  • S/PV.6362 (20 July 2010) was a meeting under the heading of “Peace and Security in Africa,” to discuss the Secretary-General’s 22 June report on Eritrea’s compliance with resolution 1916   regarding the border dispute between Djibouti and Eritrea.
  • S/2010/262 (28 May 2010) was a letter from Eritrea responding to President Guelleh’s statement before the Council on 19 May.
  • S/PV.6316 (19 May 2010) was the meeting with President Guelleh. 
  • S/2010/225 (3 May 2010) was a letter from the Sanctions Committee chair conveying a document from Eritrea explaining its positions on various issues.
  • S/2010/91 (10 March 2010) was a letter from Sanctions Committee chair transmitting the Monitoring Group’s report.
  • S/PV.6254 (23 December 2009) was the adoption of resolution 1907 with explanations of vote.
  • S/2009/319 (19 June 2009) was a letter from Djibouti requesting action on its border dispute with Eritrea as soon as possible.
  • S/2009/217 (23 April 2009) was a letter from Djibouti submitting to the Council decisions of IGAD, AU, the League of Arab States and the Organization of the Islamic Conference calling for the implementation of resolution 1862.
  • S/2009/180 (6 April 2009) was a letter from Djibouti stating that pending a final report from the Secretary-General  there was no need for a Council statement "as such an action would tend to compromise the significance and integrity" of resolution 1862.
  • S/2009/28 (12 January 2009) was a letter from Eritrea expressing disappointment at the discussions in the Council to adopt a resolution.
  • S/2008/766 (4 December 2008) was a letter from Djibouti refuting Eritrea's statements on the crisis.
  • S/2008/700 (10 November 2008) was a letter from Eritrea criticising the Council for considering action against Eritrea and, referring to Ethiopia,  accusing the Council of double standards.
  • S/2008/690 (4 November 2008) was a letter from Eritrea drawing attention to Ethiopia's occupation of Eritrean territories and calling on the Council to act.
  • S/2008/673 (24 October 2008) was a letter from Eritrea, referring to the circulation of the report from the Eritrea-Ethiopia Border Commission as a document of the Council on 3 October, accusing the US of orchestrating the Eritrea/Djibouti conflict as a "diversionary scheme".
  • S/2008/602 (11 September 2008) was the report of the fact-finding mission that visited the region from 28 July to 6 August presented by the Secretary-General and addressed to the president of the Security Council.
  • S/PV.6000 (23 October 2008) was a Council debate in which the President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, participated.
  • S/2008/635 (3 October 2008) was a note verbale from Djibouti requesting that its president be allowed to address the Council.
  • S/2008/446 (7 July 2008) was a letter from Eritrea stating that Djibouti's accusations and the Council's presidential statement of 12 June were part of an attempt at diverting attention from Ethiopia's acts of aggression against Eritrea.
  • SC/9376  (25 June 2008) was a press statement requesting that a fact-finding mission be sent to the region.
  • S/PV.5924 (24 June 2008) was a Council debate in which Djibouti and Eritrea presented their views on the crisis between the two countries.
  • S/2008/294 (5 May 2008) was a letter from Djibouti bringing the border situation to the Council’s attention.
