Selected Security Council Resolutions

  • S/RES/1819 (18 June 2008) requested the Secretary-General to extend the mandate of the Panel of Experts on Liberia until 20 December 2008.
  • S/RES/1793 (21 December 2007) granted exemption from the Council's travel ban for witnesses who might need to appear before the Special Court for Sierra Leone (dealing with the trial of former Liberian President Charles Taylor).
  • S/RES/1792 (19 December 2007) extended sanctions for a year and the mandate of the Panel of Experts on Liberia for six months.
  • S/RES/1777 (20 September 2007) extended the mandate of UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) until 30 September 2008 and endorsed the recommendation of the Secretary-General to decrease the size of the military and police components.
  • S/RES/1760 (20 June 2007) renewed the mandate of the Panel of Experts on Liberia.
  • S/RES/1753 (27 April 2007) lifted the diamonds embargo.
  • S/RES/1750 (30 March 2007) renewed UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) until 30 September and requested detailed drawdown plans.
  • S/RES/1731 (20 December 2006) renewed sanctions.
  • S/RES/1712 (29 September 2006) renewed UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL)'s mandate until 31 March 2007.
  • S/RES/1694 (13 July 2006) increased UNMIL's police component and decreased UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL)'s military component.
  • S/RES/1689 (20 June 2006) renewed sanctions.
  • S/RES/1688 (16 June 2006) endorsed Taylor's trial by the Special Court in International Criminal Court (ICC) facilities.
  • S/RES/1683 (13 June 2006) partially lifted the arms embargo for the new security forces of Liberia.
  • S/RES/1667 (31 March 2006) renewed UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL)'s mandate as well as the deployment of UNMIL troops to provide security for the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL) until 30 September.
  • S/RES/1657 (6 February 2006) authorised UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) - UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) troop-sharing.
  • S/RES/1647 (20 December 2005) renewed sanctions.
  • S/RES/1638 (11 November 2005) mandated UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) to apprehend Charles Taylor.
  • S/RES/1631 (17 October 2005) addressed cooperation between the UN and regional organisations.
  • S/RES/1626 (19 September 2005) authorised a temporary redeployment in Sierra Leone of UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) troops.
  • S/RES/1625 (14 September 2005) was a declaration on the Council's role in conflict prevention, particularly in Africa.
  • S/RES/1609 (24 June 2005) authorised certain measures in inter-mission cooperation and future UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) - UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) - UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) troop-sharing.
  • S/RES/1579   (21 December 2004) and S/RES/1607 (21 June 2005) renewed sanctions and the Panel's mandate until 21 December 2005. 
  • S/RES/1532 (12 March 2004) imposed an assets freeze against former President Charles Taylor and associates.
  • S/RES/1521 (22 December 2003) imposed sanctions.
  • S/RES/1509 (19 September 2003) established UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).
  • S/RES/1497 (1 August 2003) authorised the deployment of a Multinational Force.
  • S/RES/1478 (6 May 2003) further imposed an embargo on timber.
  • S/RES/1467 (18 March 2003) and 1209 (19 November 1998) addressed the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in West Africa and in the whole continent respectively.

  • S/PRST/2006/38 (9 August 2006) was the statement on peace consolidation in West Africa requesting, inter alia, a report with recommendations on the cooperation between the United Nations missions deployed in the region and on the cross-border issues in West Africa.

  • S/2008/85 (8 February 2008) was the letter from the Secretary-General appointing the Panel of Experts on Liberia.
  • S/2006/365 (7 June 2006) was a letter from the Liberian government requesting the lifting of the diamond and timber sanctions and of the travel ban imposed through resolution 1521.
  • S/2006/207 (31 March 2006) was a letter from the Netherlands to the President of the Security Council indicating the willingness of the Netherlands to host the Special Court for Sierra Leone for the trial of Charles Taylor.    
  • S/2006/71 (2 February 2006) contained the Secretary-General's request for troop-sharing between UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI).
  • S/2005/833 (30 December 2005) contained the latest annual report of the Council Ad Hoc Working Group on Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa.
