Security Council Resolutions

  • S/RES/2008 (16 September 2011) extended the mandate of UNMIL until 30 September 2012 and called on UNOCI and UNMIL to coordinate strategies and operations in the Liberia-Côte d’Ivoire border regions.
  • S/RES/2000 (27 July 2011) renewed the mandate of UNOCI at its current force levels (including the earlier ad hoc increases) until 31 July 2012.
  • S/RES/1992 (29 June 2011) extended the temporary redeployment of armed helicopters from UNMIL to UNOCI until 30 September 2011.
  • S/RES/1981 (13 May 2011) extended the mandate of UNOCI until 31 July and authorised the Secretary-General to extend until 30 June the temporary redeployment of UNMIL military assets to support UNOCI.
  • S/RES/1980 (28 April 2011) extended the sanctions regime and the mandate of the group of experts monitoring it for one year.
  • S/RES/1975 (30 March 2011) imposed sanctions on Gbagbo and his circle.
  • S/RES/1968 (16 February 2011) extended the mandate of troops temporarily deployed from UNMIL to UNOCI for another three months.
  • S/RES/1967 (19 January 2011) authorised an increase of 2,000 troops in the overall strength of UNOCI military personnel and extended the mandate of troops temporarily deployed from the UNMIL to UNOCI.
  • S/RES/1962 (20 December 2010) renewed the mandate of UNOCI until 30 June 2011, authorised the temporary redeployment of up to four weeks of troops from the UNMIL to UNOCI, as well as the extension until 31 March 2011 of the temporary deployment of up to 500 additional military personnel to UNOCI, which was approved by resolution 1942.
  • S/RES/1951 (24 November 2010) authorised the temporary deployment of troops from UNMIL to UNOCI.
  • S/RES/1946 (15 October 2010) extended both the Côte d’Ivoire sanctions regime and the mandate of the Group of Experts until 30 April 2011.
  • S/RES/1942 (29 September 2010) authorised the deployment of 500 additional troops to UNOCI to help with security during the election period.
  • S/RES/1933 (30 June 1010) extended the mandate of UNOCI until the end of 2010.
  • S/RES/1924 (27 May 2010) was a a one month technical rollover of the UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) mandate.
  • S/RES/1911  (28 January 2010) extended the mandate of UNOCI until 31 May 2010.
  • S/RES/1893 (29 October 2009) extended both the Côte d’Ivoire sanctions regime and the mandate of the Group of Experts until 31 October 2010. 
  • S/RES/1880 (30 July 2009) extended the mandate of UNOCI until 31 January 2010.
  • S/RES/1865 (27 January 2009) extended the mandate of UNOCI for six months. The resolution reduced the troop level in line with the Secretary-General's recommendations.
  • S/RES/1842 (29 October 2008) extended  the sanctions regime and the mandate of the Group of Experts.
  • S/RES/1826 (29 July 2008) renewed UNOCI and the French troops supporting it until 31 January 2009.
  • S/RES/1795 (15 January 2008) renewed UNOCI and the French forces which support it until 30 July 2008.
  • S/RES/1782 (29 October 2007) renewed the the mandate of the Group of Experts and the sanctions regime until 31 October 2008.
  • S/RES/1765 (16 July 2007) renewed UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire's mandate until 15 January 2008 to support elections and the full implementation of the Ouagadougou agreement.
  • S/RES/1763 (29 June 2007) extended the UNOCI mandate until 16 July.
  • S/RES/1761 (20 June 2007) extended the mandate of the Group of Experts until 31 October 2007.
  • S/RES/1739 (10 January 2007) extended the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) mandate until 30 June 2007 with increased troop levels.
  • S/RES/1727  (15 December 2006) renewed the sanctions regime in Côte d'Ivoire until 31 October 2007.
  • S/RES/1726  (15 December 2006) renewed the mandate of the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire until 10 January 2007.
  • S/RES/1721 (1 November 2006) prolonged by one year the transitional period in Côte d'Ivoire and reinforced the powers of the prime minister.
  • S/RES/1708 (14 September 2006) extended the mandate of the Group of Experts until 15 December and requested a brief written update before 1 December.
  • S/RES/1682   (2 June 2006) authorised until 15 December 2006 an increase in the strength of the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire of up to 1,500 additional troops.
  • S/RES/1667 (31 March 2006) extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), reaffirmed its intention to deploy troops between the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) and to review the tasks and troop level of UNOCI.
  • S/RES/1657  (6 February 2006) authorised the deployment of an infantry company from the UN Mission in Liberia to the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire until 31 March. 
  • S/RES/1652  (24 January 2006) extended the mandate of the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire until 15 December and expressed the intention to review troop levels in March 2006.
  • S/RES 1643  (15 December 2005) renewed until 15 December 2006 the sanctions regime of resolution 1572 and established a diamonds embargo.
  • S/RES/1633 (21 October 2005) extended President Gbagbo's term by 12 months, supported the creation of the IWG, called for the designation of a prime minister and reaffirmed its readiness to impose sanctions.
  • S/RES/1609 (24 June 2005) extended the mandate of the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) for seven months, further detailed the mandate, increased the contingents, and authorised the temporary redeployment of military and civilian police personnel among the UN Mission in Liberia, the UN Mission in Sierra Leone and the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire.
  • S/RES/1603 (3 June 2005) endorsed the Pretoria Agreements, established a High Representative for the Elections in Côte d'Ivoire and renewed the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire's mandate until 24 June.
  • S/RES/1600 (04 May 2005) welcomed the Pretoria Agreement and extended the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire's mandate by one month.
  • S/RES/1594 (4 April 2005) extended the mandate of the UN Mission in Côte d'Ivoire
  • S/RES/1584 (1 February 2005) authorised the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire to monitor the arms embargo and created a Group of Experts to provide information to the Sanctions Committee.
  • S/RES/1572 (15 November 2004) established an arms embargo and called for sanctions against individuals found to be obstructing the peace process, violating human rights, publicly inciting hatred and violence and violating the embargo.
  • S/RES/1528 (27 February 2004) established the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire.

Presidential Statements

  • S/PRST/2009/33 (8 December 2009) noted with concern the postponement of the first round of the presidential election, scheduled for 29 November 2009.
  • S/PRST/2009/25 (29 September) was a presidential statement expressing concern about the delay in the publication of the Ivorian electoral list and expressing the Council’s intention to review the situation by 15 October 2009.
  • S/PRST/2009/24 (5 August 2009) requested the Secretary-General to provide in his reports on specific missions an indication of progress towards achieving a coordinated UN approach in-country, and in particular on critical gaps to achieving peacebuilding objectives alongside the mission.
  • S/PRST/2009/16 (29 May 2009) was a presidential statement welcoming the CPC’s 18 May communiqué.
  • S/PRST/2008/42 (7 November 2008) expressed concern about the delay of the elections, and urged the parties in the country to take immediate, concrete and credible steps towards holding elections before the end of spring 2009.
  • S/PRST/2008/11 (29 April 2008) welcomed the approval by the Ivorian authorities of the proposal from the Independent Electoral Commission to organize presidential elections on 30 November 2008.
  • S/PRST/2007/8 (28 March 2007) endorsed the Ouagadougou Agreement, supported the appointment of Soro as prime minister and requested a report from the Secretary-General on the UN's future role in the peace process.
  • S/PRST/2006/58 (21 December 2006) endorsed the International Working Group's communiqué and reiterated support for the prime minister.
  • S/PRST/2006/37 (7 August 2006) condemned the July disturbances, reaffirmed its support for the implementation of targeted sanctions, encouraged the prime minister to take action to deploy 150 mobile courts before the next International Working Group (IWG) meeting and called on the IWG to monitor such progress.
  • S/PRST/2006/32 (19 July 2006) welcomed the Yamoussoukro meeting of Ivorian leaders, requested the Secretary-General to produce a report on the implementation of the parties' commitments before a subsequent meeting in September, underlined the Council's readiness to impose targeted measures and endorsed the eighth communiqué of the International Working Group.
  • S/PRST/2006/23 (24 May 2006) endorsed the seventh final communiqué of the International Working Group; strongly condemned violence against civilians, political leaders and impartial forces; and underlined the targeted measures against those blocking the peace process and obstructing the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI).
  • S/PRST/2006/20 (27 April 2006) endorsed the sixth International Working Group final communiqué; expressed concern at the delay in the Demobilization, Disarmament and Reintegration (DDR) and identification processes; and underlined the targeted measures against those blocking the peace process and obstructing the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI).
  • S/PRST/2006/14 (29 March 2006) welcomed progress and reiterated concern with the security situation.
  • S/PRST/2006/9 (23 February 2006) reiterated full support for the International Working Group and the Ivorian prime minister, urged the Ivorian state to facilitate the return of humanitarian agencies in the west of the country, and expressed the intention to review the implementation of resolution 1633 in March.
  • S/PRST/2006/2 (19 January 2006) strongly condemned the attacks against the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire.
  • S/PRST/2005/60 (9 December 2005) endorsed the final communiqué of the International Working Group of 6 December 2005 and reaffirmed that the prime minister must have all the necessary powers described in resolution 1633.
  • S/PRST/2005/58 (30 November 2005) urged the parties in Côte d'Ivoire to find a candidate for the position of prime minister.
