Selected Resolutions

  • S/RES/1791 (19 December 2007) extended the mandate of BINUB until 31 December 2008.
  • S/RES/1719 (25 October 2006) established the UN Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB).
  • S/RES/1711 (29 September 2006) extended until 31 December the temporary redeployment of UN Operation in Burundi (ONUB) personnel to the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC).
  • S/RES/1692 (30 June 2006) extended the UN Operation in Burundi's (ONUB) mandate until 31 December 2006.
  • S/RES/1669 (10 April 2006) authorised the temporary redeployment of military and civilian personnel from the UN Operation in Burundi (ONUB) to the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC).
  • S/RES/1650 (21 December 2005) extended the UN Operation in Burundi (ONUB) until 1 July 2005 and authorised the sharing of troops between UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) and the UN Operation in Burundi (ONUB).
  • S/RES/1641 (30 November 2005) is a short technical rollover of ONUB's mandate.
  • S/RES/1606 (20 June 2005) requested the Secretary-General to start negotiations on transitional justice mechanisms in Burundi.
  • S/RES/1602 (31 May 2005) extended the mandate of the UN Operation in Burundi until 1 December 2005.
  • S/RES/1545 (21 May 2004) established the UN Operation in Burundi (ONUB).

Selected Presidential Statements

  • S/PRST/2008/10 (24 April 2008) was a statement of the Council expressed concern at armed confrontations between the FNL and the Burundian national forces.  It also expressed the Council's readiness to consider "other additional measures" in support of peace and stability in the country.
  • S/PRST/2007/16 (30 May 2007) was a statement in which the Council welcomed the establishment of BINUB and called on parties to resolve outstanding issues in a spirit of cooperation.
  • S/PRST/2006/12 (23 March 2006) approved the recommendations in the Secretary-General's sixth report.
  • S/PRST/2005/19 (23 May 2005) welcomed the joint declaration by the Government and the Forces nationales de liberation (FNL) on the cessation of hostilities.
  • S/PRST/2004/30 (15 August 2004) condemned massacre of over 150 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

  • S/2007/287 (17 May 2007) was the first report on BINUB.
  • S/2006/994 (18 December 2006) was a report on the UN Operation in Burundi (ONUB).
  • S/2006/851 (27 October 2006) and Corr. 1 (6 November 2006) was the report on Children and Armed Conflict in Burundi.
  • S/2006/842 (25 October 2006) was a report on Burundi.
  • S/2006/429/Add.1 (14 August 2006) provided specifics on the mandate and structure of the integrated office in Burundi.

  • S/2007/92  (13 February 2007) was a letter from France conveying the conclusions of the Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict with respect to the report of the Secretary-General on armed conflict in Burundi (S/2006/851 and Corr.1).
  • S/2006/1020 (18 December 2006) was the letter from the Secretary-General appointing Youssef Mahmoud as his
    Executive Representative for Burundi and head of the UN Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB).
  • S/2006/867 (6 November 2006) noted a withdrawal schedule.
  • S/2006/866 (1 November 2006) was from the Secretary-General on the adjustment to the withdrawal schedule.
  • S/2006/206 (31 March 2006) contained the Secretary-General's intention to redeploy troops temporarily from the UN Operation in Burundi (ONUB) to the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC).
  • S/2005/736 (23 November 2005) contained Bujumbura's position on the future of UN Operation in Burundi (ONUB).

  • S/PV.5966 (26 August 2008) was a debate on Burundi in which members were briefed by the Executive Representative of the Secretary-General for Burundi Youssef Mahmoud; the Chair of the PBC country specific configuration on Burundi, Ambassador Anders Lidén of Sweden; and Ambassador Augustin Nsanze of Burundi.   
  • SC/9339 (22 May 2008) was the press statement expressing concerns about the clashes between government forces and the FNL in Burundi and called for an end to hostilities and full implementation of the 2006 comprehensive ceasefire agreement. 
  • S/PV.5897 (22 May 2008) was the verbatim record of the debate on the third report of the Secretary on BINUB.
  • S/PV.5793 (6 December 2007) was the Council debate in which Ambassador Johan Løvald of Norway, chair of the PBC’s country-specific configuration for Burundi, urged the Council to continue to monitor the situation in Burundi closely and stated that Burundi’s political stability is paramount for the peacebuilding process there to be successful.
  • SC/9181 (28 November 2007) encouraged the Burundian government and FNL rebels to abide by the peace agreement and refrain from actions that would undermine its implementation.
  • SC/9056 (21 June 2007) welcomed talks between the Government of Burundi and Forces nationales de liberation (FNL).
  • SC/8921 (21 December 2006) was the press statement commending the UN Operation in Burundi (ONUB) for its work and stressing the challenges remaining for Burundi.
  • SC/8818 (25 August 2006) called on the government and all parties in Burundi to preserve peace and national reconciliation and encouraged the government to follow due process in its investigations into the possible coup attempt.

  • PBC/2/BDI/7 (20 March 2008) was the PBC’s conclusions and recommendations on the situation in Burundi.
  • PBC/2/BDI/4 (27 November 2007) was the Monitoring and Tracking Mechanism of the Strategic Framework for Peacebuilding in Burundi.
  • PBC/OC/1/2 (21 June 2006) was a letter from the president of the Security Council to the Secretary-General referring Burundi to the Peacebuilding Commission.
  • PBC/1/BDI/2  (21 May 2007) was the report of the PBC mission to Burundi.
