Selected Security Council Resolutions

  • S/RES/1793 (21 December 2007) extended the mandate of UN Integrated Office in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL) until 30 September 2008.  
  • S/RES/1750 (30 March 2007) noted that the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) should continue to provide administrative and related support and security for activities in Liberia of the Special Court of Sierra Leone.
  • S/RES/1734 (22 December 2006) extended the mandate of UN Integrated Office in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL) until 31 December 2007.
  • S/RES/1712 (29 September 2006) reiterated the continuing need for the UN Mission in Libera (UNMIL)'s support for the security of the Special Court in Sierra Leone.
  • S/RES/1688 (16 June 2006) requested the Secretary-General to assist in the transfer of former Liberian President Charles Taylor to the Special Court's special outpost in the Netherlands.
  • S/RES/1657 (6 February 2006) authorised UN Mission in Libera (UNMIL)-UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) troop-sharing.
  • S/RES/1638 (11 November 2005) mandated UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) to apprehend Charles Taylor.
  • S/RES/1631 (17 October 2005) addressed cooperation between the UN and regional organisations.
  • S/RES/1626 (19 September 2005) authorised a temporary redeployment in Sierra Leone of UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) troops.
  • S/RES/1625 (14 September 2005) was a declaration on the Council's role in conflict prevention, particularly in Africa.
  • S/RES/1620 (31 August 2005) established UN Integrated Office in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL).
  • S/RES/1610 (30 June 2005), 1537 (30 March 2004), 1492 (18 July 2003) and 1436 (24 September 2002) authorised UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL)'s drawdown.
  • S/RES/1609 (24 June 2005) authorised certain measures in inter-mission cooperation and future UNMIL-UNAMSIL-UNOCI troop-sharing.
  • S/RES/1562 (17 September 2004) redefined the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL)'s mandate from January 2005.
  • S/RES/1521 (22 December 2003) imposed an arms embargo on Liberia.
  • S/RES/1467 (18 March 2003) and 1209 (19 November 1998) addressed the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in West Africa and in the whole continent respectively.
  • S/RES/1315 (14 August 2000) called for the Special Court for Sierra Leone.
  • S/RES/1270 (22 October 1999) established the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL).

  • S/PRST/2007/23 (28 June 2007) was on the work of the Special Court for Sierra Leone.
  • S/PRST/2006/38 (9 August 2006) was the statement on peace consolidation in West Africa requesting, inter alia, a report with recommendations on the cooperation between the United Nations missions deployed in the region and on the cross-border issues in West Africa.
  • S/PRST/2005/63 (20 December 2005) marked the end of UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL)'s mandate.
  • S/PRST/2005/9 (25 February 2005) and 2004/7 (25 March 2004) considered cross-border and subregional problems in West Africa.
  • S/PRST/2005/7 (17 February 2005) addressed the issue of small arms and light weapons.

  • S/2007/257 (7 May 2007) was a report of the Secretary-General on UNIOSIL.
  • S/2007/143 (13 March 2007) was a report on cross-border issues in West Africa.
  • S/2006/922 (28 November 2006) was the third report of the Secretary-General on UN Integrated Office in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL).
  • S/2006/695 (29 August 2006) was the second report of the Secretary-General on UN Integrated Office in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL).

  • PBC/2/SLE/6 (19 June 2008) outlined conclusions and recommendations of the biannual review of the Sierra Leone Peacebuilding Cooperation Framework. 
  • PBC/2/SLE/5 (19 May 2008) was the chair’s summary of the high-level stakeholders consultation on Sierra Leone.
  • PBC/2/SLE/1 (12 December 2007) was the Sierra Leone Peacebuilding Cooperation Framework.
  • PBC/SIL/2006 SR.3 and SR.4 were the summary records of the third and fourth meetings of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC).
  • PBC/OC/1/2 (21 June 2006) referred Burundi and Sierra Leone to the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC).
  • S/2006/1050 (26 December 2006) was the letter from the chairman of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) to the president of the Council on the Burundi and Sierra Leone country-specific meetings.

  • S/2008/137 (28 February 2008) was a letter from the Council president requesting for further information from the Secretary-General on the drawdown of UNIOSIL between 5 July 2008 local elections and its completion in September 2008.
  • S/2008/63 (31 January 2008) was the letter from the Secretary-General conveying the completion strategy for UNIOSIL.
  • S/2007/777 (28 December 2007) was a letter conveying the annual report of the sanctions committee on Sierra Leone.
  • SC/9202 (14 December 2007) was a Council debate in which the chair of the PBC’s country-specific configuration, Frank Majoor, called the adoption of the Peacebuilding Cooperation Framework for Sierra Leone a “major milestone.”
  • S/2007/659 (8 November 2007) was a letter conveying the request of the Sierra Leone government for an extension of the mandate of UNIOSIL for a further period of one year.
  • SC/9121 (19 September 2007) was a press statement on the results of the run-off presidential elections and encouraged continued international support to Sierra Leone.
  • SC/9104 (27 August 2007) welcomed the results of the 11 August elections and commended the work of the Sierra Leonean National Electoral Commission.
  • S/PV.5509 (9 August 2006) was the Council debate on peace consolidation in West Africa.
  • S/2006/610 (3 August 2006) was the concept paper circulated by Ghana for the debate on peace consolidation in West Africa.
  • S/2006/207 (3 April 2006) was a letter from the Permanent Representative of the Netherlands stating that the Netherlands had informed the Special Court for Sierra Leone that it was willing to host the Special Court for the trial of Charles Taylor.
  • S/2005/843 (30 December 2005) was a report of the Sanctions Committee.
  • S/2005/833 (30 December 2005) contained an annual report of the Council Ad Hoc Working Group on Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa.
