 Selected Security Council Resolutions

  • S/RES/1802 (25 February 2008) renewed UNMIT.
  • S/RES/1745 (22 February 2007) extended UNMIT until 26 February 2008 and increased its size by up to 140 police personnel.
  • S/RES/1704 (25 August 2006) created the UN Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT).
  • S/RES/1690  (20 June 2006) extended the UN Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL) until 20 August and requested a report with recommendations for a future UN presence by 7 August.
  • S/RES/1677  (12 May 2006) renewed the UN Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL) until 20 June.
  • S/RES/1599   (28 April 2005) established the UN Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL).
  • S/RES/1543   (14 May 2004) determined that the serious crimes process be concluded by 20 May 2005.
  • S/RES/1410 (17 May 2002) established the UN Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET).
  • S/RES/1272 (25 October 1999) established UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET).
  • S/RES/1264 (15 September 1999) authorised the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET).
  • S/RES/1246 (11 June 1999) established the UN Mission in East Timor (UNAMET).

 Selected Presidential Statements

  • S/PRST/2008/5 (11 February 2008) condemned attacks against Timorese President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, called on the Timorese government to bring those responsible to justice and urged all parties to resolve disputes through peaceful means.
  • S/PRST/2007/33 (10 September 2007) was adopted echoing the Secretary-General's support of the political progress in the country while highlighting the need for the parties to resolve any disputes through exclusively peaceful channels and within the framework of democratic institutions."
  • S/PRST/2007/14 (23 May 2007) was a Council presidential statement welcoming the conclusion of the presidential elections.
  • S/PRST/2006/25 (25 May 2006) supported the deployment of the multinational force.

  • SC/8994 (4 April 2007) was a Council press statement expressing support for the elections.
  • SC/8728 (24 May 2006) expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation.

 Selected Letters

  • S/2007/647 (31 October 2007) contained the terms of reference for the 24-30 November Council visiting mission.
  • S/2006/1022 (21 December 2006) was the letter from the Timorese government asking for the deployment of another company of Portugal's Guarda Nacional Republicana.
  • S/2006/924 (29 November 2006) was a letter from the president of the Security Council noting the Secretary-General's appointment of Atul Khare as Special Representative.
  • S/2006/923 (30 October 2006) was the letter from the Secretary-General on his intention to appoint Atul Khare as Special Representative of Timor-Leste.
  • S/2006/831 (19 October 2006) was a Timorese letter requesting that the police remain under the UN and the military under the international security force.
  • S/2006/651 (14 August 2006) was a Timorese letter consenting to the deployment of proposed UN police.
  • S/2006/620 (7 August 2006) was a Timorese letter requesting, inter alia, that the military component be under UN command and control.
  • S/2006/559  (20 July 2006) was a letter from the Ambassador of New Zealand to the Council's president with an update on New Zealand's security assistance presence in Timor-Leste.
  • S/2006/440* (27 June 2006) was a letter from the Ambassador of Australia to the Council's president with an update on Australia's security assistance presence in Timor-Leste.
  • S/2006/391  (13 June 2006) contained the 8 June request by Timor-Leste for a special inquiry.
  • S/2006/383    (13 June 2006) contained the 11 June letter from the Timorese authorities to the Secretary-General regarding the future UN presence in Timor-Leste.
  • S/2006/320, 325326 and 327  (24 and 25 May 2006) contained letters from New Zealand, Australia and Portugal to the Council president regarding Timor-Leste.
  • S/2006/319    (24 May 2006) was the letter from three Timor-Leste leaders informing the Secretary-General about the request to Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand and Portugal for defence and security assistance.
  • S/2006/196  (29 March 2006) contained the Council's request for options for post-UN Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL) assistance.
  • S/2006/230  (10 April 2006), 157 (13 March 2006) and 39 (20 January 2006) contained Dili's requests for a follow-on special political mission.
  • S/2005/613    (28 September 2005) was the Council's request for recommendations on justice and reconciliation for Timor-Leste. 
  • S/2005/459    (15 July 2005) contained the Timorese position on the Commission of Experts (CoE) report.
  • S/2005/458    (15 July 2005) contained the Commission of Experts (CoE) Report.

 Security Council Debates

  • S/PV.5843 (21 February 2008) was an open debate on Timor-Leste.
  • S/PV.5801 (13 December 2007) was a Council debate in which Ambassador Sofia Borges of Timor-Leste requested that the Council extend the mandate of the UN Mission in Timor-Leste until 2012 in order to help the country strengthen democratic governance.
  • S/PV.5791 (6 December 2007) was the record of the briefing by the head of the visiting mission, Ambassador Dumisani Kumalo of South Africa.

  • SG/SM/11101 (26 July 2007) was the statement regarding UN officials not testifying before the Commission of Truth and Friendship.
  • ST/SGB/2006/7  (31 May 2006) was the Secretary-General's Bulletin establishing a regime for the management, care, preservation, storage and access to the complete copy of all the records compiled by the Serious Crimes Unit (SCU).
  • ST/AI/2006/2*  (31 May 2006) contained the administrative instructions with detailed rules regarding the handling of the copies.
