Security Council Resolutions
  • S/RES/1929 (9 June 2010) imposed a fourth round of sanctions against Iran. (Twelve members voted in favour of the resolution, Brazil and Turkey voted against and Lebanon abstained.) The resolution reaffirmed past Council decisions, imposed new measures on Iran and requested the Secretary-General to establish a panel of experts for a period of one year to assist the Iran Sanctions Committee in carrying out its work.
  • S/RES/1887 (24 September 2009) reaffirmed previous resolutions related to Iran's nuclear activities.
  • S/RES/1835  (27 September 2008) reaffirmed commitment to a negotiated solution within the E3+3 dual-track framework, and called upon Iran to comply with previous Council resolutions.
  • S/RES/1803 (3 March 2008) established a travel ban on some individuals already subject to sanctions, added new names to the list of individuals and entities subject to assets freeze, expanded the scope of the embargo on proliferation sensitive items by adding dual-use items and authorised states to inspect Iranian cargoes to and from Iran if there are suspicions that they may transport prohibited items.
  • S/RES/1747 (24 March 2007) established a ban on Iran’s arms exports and added names to the list of people and entities subject to assets freeze.
  • S/RES/1737 (23 December 2006) banned trade with Iran of certain nuclear proliferation-sensitive items, imposed an asset freeze on a list of persons and entities involved in proliferation-sensitive activities and established a Sanctions Committee.
  • S/RES/1696 (31 July 2006) demanded that Iran implement steps required by the IAEA to reestablish confidence in the peaceful nature of its nuclear programme and, in this context, suspend uranium enrichment activities.

Presidential Statements

  • S/PRST/2006/15 (29 March 2006) urged Iran to suspend all activities related to nuclear enrichment and reprocessing, including research and development, to be verified by the IAEA in a report due by 28 April.

Selected Letters

  • S/2010/188 (13 April 2010) was a letter from Iran which argued that the US nuclear posture with regard to Iran constituted a threat to international peace and security.
  • S/2010/172 (26 March 2010) asserted Iran's commitment to the NPT and cooperation with the IAEA. 
  • S/2009/688 (31 December 2009) was a letter from the Chairman of the Iran Sanctions Committee transmitting its 2009 annual report.
  • S/2009/633 (7 December 2009) was a letter from the Secretary-General to the Council conveying the resolution on Iran adopted by the IAEA Board of Governors on 27 November 2009.
  • S/2009/574 (5 November 2009) was a letter from Israel to the Secretary-General and the Council relating to violations of resolution 1747.
  • S/2008/776 (10 December 2008) was a letter from Iran protesting France, UK, and US allegations against Iran’s nuclear programme and reemphasising that the programme is peaceful and that all outstanding issues have been cleared.
  • S/2008/643 (10 October 2008) was a letter from Iran enclosing a 6 October letter from Iranian negotiator Jalili Solana and to the E3+3 on the failure to proceed with the diplomatic track.
  • S/2008/599 (9 September 2008) was a letter from Iran complaining about Israel’s threats against Iran.
  • S/2008/554 (15 August 2008) was a letter from Iran reiterating that its nuclear programme is peaceful, that all ambiguities regarding its nuclear activities have been removed and that, therefore, there is no ground for placing this issue on the Council’s agenda; the letter also rejected accusations that some Iranian banks have been involved in financing related to nuclear proliferation and terrorism activities.
  • S/2008/520 (1 August 2008) was a letter from France, the UK and the US providing information on overseas branches and subsidiaries of Bank Melli and Bank Saderat so that states can exercise vigiliance over the activities of these Iranian banks in their territories in conformity with resolution 1803.
  • S/2008/482 (22 July 2008) was a letter from Israel calling on the international community to address the threats posed by the emergence of a nuclear Iran, and alleging that Iran is a regional source of instability and extremism that exports terrorism by supporting Hamas and Hezbollah.
  • S/2008/397 (17 June 2008) was a letter from Iran enclosing Iran’s 13 May proposed package for constructive negotiation with the E3+3.
  • S/2008/393 (16 June 2008) was a letter from the UK enclosing the E3+3's 12 June letter to Iran and a revised package of proposals for a possible basis of cooperation. 
  • S/2008/377 (6 June 2008) was a letter from Iran protesting Israeli threats of resorting to use force against Iran.
  • S/2008/203 (24 March 2008) was a letter from Iran’s foreign minister reacting to the Council’s adoption of resolution 1803.
  • S/2008/138 (27 February 2008) was a letter from Iran saying that it had fully implemented the work plan, and arguing therefore that the ambiguities and pretexts on the basis of which the Iranian nuclear issue was put on the agendas of the IAEA and the Council ceased to exist.  
  • S/2008/116 (25 February 2008) was a letter from Iran commenting on the latest IAEA report.
  • S/2008/117 (20 February 2008) was a letter from Iran protesting remarks by the Israeli prime minister and an Israeli ambassador threatening to use military action against Iran.
  • S/2008/110 (19 February 2008) was a letter from Israel protesting remarks by two senior members of the Iranian government threatening Israel with complete destruction.
  • S/2007/780 (31 December 2007) was a letter from the chairman of the 1737 Sanctions Committee transmitting a report covering the activities of the Committee from 23 December 2006 to 31 December 2007. 
  • S/2007/765 (28 December 2007) was a letter from Iran reacting to the NIE report.
  • S/2007/692 (30 November 2007) was a letter by Iran on its cooperation with the IAEA.
  • S/2007/378  (21 June 2007) was a letter from Iran rejecting allegations made by Nicholas Burns, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, implicating Iran in terrorist attacks.
  • S/2007/355 (13 June 2007) was a letter from Iran regarding the abduction of 5 Iranian consular officers in Erbil (Iraq) by the US.
  • S/2007/354 (11 June 2007) was a letter from Iran denouncing Israel's threats of resorting to force against Iran, and requesting the Council to react to those.
  • S/2007/342 (1 June 2007) was a letter from Iran to the Secretary-General alleging the uncovering of American espionage networks in Iran, and requesting explanations from the US.
  • S/2007/341 and S/2007/343 (1 June 2007) were letters from Iran to the Secretary-General concerning US media coverage of the head of the terrorist group "Jundullah".
  • S/2007/180 (29 March 2007) was the letter from Iran claiming the violation of Iranian territorial waters by two British naval vessels.
  • S/2007/28  (19 January 2007) was a letter from Iran strongly condemning the US military attack on the Iranian consulate in the Iraqi city of Erbil and the abduction of the Iranian officers.
  • S/2007/20  (18 January 2007) was a note by the president of the Council listing the newly elected chairmen and vice-chairmen of the subsidiary bodies for 2007.
  • S/2006/1024  (23 December 2006) was a response from Iran to the adoption of resolution 1737.
  • S/2006/1008  (19 December 2006) was a letter from Iran drawing attention to unlawful possession of nuclear weapons by Israel.
  • S/2006/985  (7 December 2006) was a letter from the UK containing the guidelines for sensitive missile-relevant transfers.
  • S/2006/815  (13 October 2006) was the letter from France containing the NSG list of items, material, equipments, goods and technology related to ballistic missiles programmes.
  • S/2006/814  (13 October 2006) was the letter from France containing the MTCR list of items, material, equipments, goods and technology related to nuclear programmes.
  • S/2006/806 (11 October 2006) was a letter from Iran transmitting its response to the EU3+3 June package of proposals.
  • S/2006/521  (13 July 2006) was a letter from France to the President of the Council enclosing the proposals of the P5+1 for a comprehensive long-term arrangement with Iran.
  • S/2006/305  (31 May 2006) was a letter from the League of Arab States to the Secretary-General enclosing a statement issued by Arab leaders on the question of making the Middle East region into a zone free of WMDs.
  • S/2006/305 (18 May 2006) was the letter from the Permanent Observer of the League of Arab States.
  • S/2006/273 (1 May 2006) was the letter from Iran to the Secretary-General deploring recent US statements that "all options remain on the table" to deal with Iran.
  • S/2006/178 (22 March 2006) was the letter from Iran to the Secretary-General deploring US threats to resort to force against Iran.
  • S/2006/80 (7 February 2006) was the letter from the Secretary-General to the President of the Council including the list of IAEA documents on the implementation of the NPT Safeguards Agreement in Iran, communicated by the IAEA.

IAEA Board Resolutions

  • GOV/2009/82(27 November 2009) called on Iran to comply with all its international obligations and cooperate fully with the IAEA.
  • GOV/2006/14 (4 February 2006) underlined the necessary steps that Iran should take to re-establish confidence in the peaceful nature of its nuclear programme and reported the issue to the Security Council.
  • GOV/2005/77 (24 September 2005) found that Iran's refusal to suspend all enrichment related activities and to ratify the Additional Protocol constituted non-compliance to the IAEA Statute and determined that the Security Council was competent to deal with this issue.

  • GOV/2004/90 (29 November 2004) welcomed Iran's decision to continue and extend its suspension of all enrichment related and reprocessing activities and underlined that the full and sustained implementation of the suspension was essential to addressing outstanding issues.
