Selected Security Council Resolutions

  • S/RES/1827 (30 July 2008) terminated the mandate of UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
  • S/RES/1798 (30 January 2008) extended UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE)'s mandate until 31 July 2008. 
  • S/RES/1767 (30 July 2007) extended UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE)'s mandate until 31 January 2008. 
  • S/RES/1741  (30 January 2007) extended the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) until 31 July and approved the drawdown.
  • S/RES/1710 (29 September 2006) extended the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea until 31 January.
  • S/RES/1681 (31 May 2006) extended the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea until 30 September and downsized the mission to 2,300 troops.
  • S/RES/1670 (13 April 2006) extended the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea until 15 May.
  • S/RES/1640 (23 November 2005) demanded border demarcation and the lifting of restrictions on the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
  • S/RES/1622 (13 September 2005) further adjusted the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
  • S/RES/1560 (14 September 2004) adjusted the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea's presence and operations.
  • S/RES/1344 (15 March 2001) stressed the fact that the peace agreements link the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea's termination to the demarcation.
  • S/RES/1320 (15 September 2000) increased the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea and authorised it to monitor the Temporary Security Zone.
  • S/RES/1312 (31 July 2000) established the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE).
  • S/RES/1298 (17 May 2000) established an arms embargo against both parties.

Selected Security Council Presidential Statements

  • S/PRST/2008/20 (12 June 2008) condemned Eritrea's military action against Djibouti.
  • S/PRST/2008/12 (30 April 2008) indicated that the Council will decide on "the terms of a future UN engagement and on the future of UNMEE," following  consultations with Ethiopia and Eritrea.
  • S/PRST/2008/7 (15 February 2008) condemned Eritrea's lack of cooperation with UNMEE.  
  • S/PRST/2007/43 (13 November 2007) reiterating the call for a solution to the situation between Eritrea and Ethiopia.
  • S/PRST/2006/10 (24 February 2006) welcomed the meeting of the Witnesses to the Algiers Peace Agreement.
  • S/PRST/2005/62 (14 December 2005) agreed with the temporary relocation of part of UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea's staff in Eritrea to Ethiopia.
  • S/PRST/2005/47 (4 October 2005) urged Eritrea to lift restrictions.
  • S/PRST/2001/14 (15 May 2001) noted the termination of the arms embargo.

Selected Letters

  • S/2008/496  (28 July 2008) was the letter from the Secretary-General to the president of the Security Council informing him of the decision of Ethiopia and Eritrea not accede to any of the options for future UN engagement in the region.
  • S/2008/487/Add.1 (24 July 2008) was the second annex letter to the letter dated 24 July from Eritrea conveying its view to the Secretary-General that it considered the work of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission fulfilled.
  • S/2008/487 (24 July 2008) was the letter from Eritrea rejecting the options proposed by the UN Secretariat to support the implementation of the Algiers Agreements.
  • S/2008/427 (30 June 2008)  was the letter from the president of the Security Council to conveying the Council’s agreement with the Secretary-General’s proposal that the troops of UNMEE temporarily relocated from Eritrea to their home countries should be considered as repatriated.
  • S/2008/368 (5 June 2008) was a letter from the Secretary General to the president of the Security Council proposing that the troops of the UNMEE temporarily relocated from Eritrea to their home countries now be considered as repatriated.
  • S/2008/294 (5 May 2008) was Djibouti's complaint against Eritrea on the border crisis.
  • S/2008/287 (30 April 2008) was Eritrea's response to 30 April Council statement.
  • S/2008/172 (10 March 2008) contained Eritrea’s response to the Secretary-General’s report on the relocation of UNMEE
  • S/2008/156 (4 March 2008) was the letter conveying Eritrea’s response to the UN Secretariat’s reports on Eritrea’s conduct.
  • S/2008/148 (3 March 2008) conveyed a document from the Permanent Mission of Eritrea to the UN seeking to refocus attention on the need for the Council to find closure to the Ethiopia-Eritrea border dispute.
  • S/2008/66 (1 February 2008) was the letter from the Secretary-General to the President of the Security Council informing of Eritrea’s continued restrictions of supply of fuel to UNMEE and his intention to send a technical assessment mission to the region.
  • S/2008/54 (29 January 2008) contained Eritrea’s response to the report of the Secretary-General on Ethiopia and Eritrea (S/2008/40).
  • S/2007/693 (30 November 2007) contained Eretria's response to a letter dated 27 November from Ethiopia's Foreign Minister to the President of the EEBC.
  • S/2007/660 (8 November 2007) contained Eritrea's position in regards to the EEBC.
  • S/2007/580 (28 September 2007) contained Eritrea's position regarding Ethiopia's perspective on its perceived breaches of the Algiers Agreements.
  • S/2007/366 (15 June 2007) contained Eritrea's position on the border conflict.
  • S/2007/350  (8 June 2007) contained Ethiopia's position in the April progress report of the Secretary-General and 8 May press statement of the Council.

  • S/2007/4  (4 January 2007) contained Eritrea's position on certain points in the December special report of the Secretary-General.
  • S/2006/1036  (28 December 2006) contained Eritrea's position on the appointment of a Special Representative.
  • S/2006/890  (15 November 2006) and 905 (20 November 2006) contained respectively Ethiopia's and Eritrea's position on the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission's (EEBC) intention to convene a meeting on options for moving the demarcation process forward.
  • S/2006/362 (2 June 2006) was the letter from the president of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission to the Secretary-General containing a report on the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission meeting of 17 May 2006.
  • S/2006/328 (25 May 2006) was the letter from the legal counsel to Ethiopia to the president of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission.
  • S/2006/126 (22 February 2006) contained the Witnesses' statement on the recent talks.
  • S/2005/816 (20 December 2005) and S/2006/3 (3 January 2006) contained reactions by Ethiopia and Eritrea to the Claims Commission award.
  • S/2005/774 (9 December 2005) was a letter from Ethiopia's foreign minister indicating Addis Ababa's position on demarcation.
  • S/2005/737 (25 November 2005) contained Eritrea's criticisms of resolution 1640 .
  • S/2005/723 (16 November 2005) was the report of Ambassador Kenzo Oshima of Japan's visit.
  • S/2005/688 (28 October 2005) expressed Asmara's frustration with the lack of demarcation.
  • S/2000/1183 (12 December 2000) contained the Algiers Peace Agreement.

  • S/2008/226 (7 April 2008) was a special report on proposals for UNMEE.
  • S/2008/145 (3 March 3008) was a special report on the temporary relocation of UNMEE from Eritrea.
  • S/2008/40 (23 January 2008) and S/2008/40/Corr. 1 (24 January 2008) was the UNMEE report.  
  • S/2007/645 (1 November 2007) was the Secretary-General's UNMEE report.
  • S/2007/440 (24 July 2007) was the Secretary-General's report which called for efforts to break the peace process stalemate. 
  • S/2007/250 (30 April 2007) progress report of the Secretary-General indicating the continuation of the impasse in the peace process.
  • S/2007/33  (22 January 2007) included a strong response from the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission to criticisms made by Ethiopia in its November 2006 letter.
  • S/2006/992  (15 December 2006) contained options for the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea and the November Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission decision.
