Selected Security Council Resolutions

  • S/RES/1718 (14 October 2006) expressed grave concern over North Korea's nuclear test, imposed sanctions and set up a sanctions committee.
  • S/RES/1695 (15 July 2006) condemned North Korea's launch of ballistic missiles.
  • S/RES/1540 (28 April 2004) affirmed that proliferation of nuclear weapons as well as the means of delivery constitutes a threat to international peace and security.
  • S/RES/825 (11 May 1993) called upon North Korea to reconsider withdrawing from the non-proliferation treaty and to honour its non-proliferation obligations under the treaty.

Selected Presidential Statements

  • S/PRST/2006/41 (6 October 2006) was the statement expressing concern over North Korea's declaration that it would conduct a nuclear test.

Selected Letters

  • S/2008/547 (11 August 2008) was a letter from North Korea claiming that the US has been undermining the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (a body supervising the implementation of the 1953 armistice agreement ending the Korea war) and has created the nuclear issue in the Korean peninsula by massively supplying South Korea with nuclear weapons.
  • S/2008/435 (3 July 2008) was a letter from North Korea on the US lifting of major economic sanctions against it.  
  • S/2007/778  (31 December 2007) provided an overview of the 1718 Committee's 2007 work.
  • S/2006/481 (4 July 2006) was the letter from Japan requesting a meeting of the Security Council after North Korea launched a ballistic missile.
  • S/1998/866 (17 September 1998) was the letter from North Korea with a statement on the action of the Council after the launch of a missile on 31 August 1998.
  • S/1998/865 (16 September 1998) was the letter from North Korea condemning Japan's action since the North Korea launched a missile on 31 August 1998.
  • S/1998/835 (4 September 1998) was the letter from Japan informing the Council that North Korea had launched a missile on 31 August 1998.

  • A/HRC/7/L.28 (25 March 2008) condemned the DPRK’s human rights violations.
  • IAEA report  (17 August 2007) (GOV/2007/45-GC(51)/19) verified the shut-down of the Yongbyon reactor.

  • S/PV.5618  (11 January 2007) was a briefing to the UN Security Council by Ambassador Peter Burian of Slovakia who was also the 2006 Chair of the Sanctions Committee. 
  • SCA/6/06 (9) (1 November 2006) was the note verbale to UN member states on the need to report to the Council within thirty days of the adoption of resolution 1718.
  • S/2006/853 and Corr. 1 (1 November 2006) contained the list of chemical and biological items, materials, equipment, goods and technologies related to weapons of mass destruction programmes; these lists superseded S/2006/816 mentioned in resolution 1718.
  • S/2006/833 (20 October 2006) was the note from the president of the Council on the election of the chairman and vice-chairman for the Sanctions Committee on North Korea.
  • S/2006/814, 815, and 816 (13 October 2006) contained the list of items related to ballistic missile programmes.
  • A/61/349 (15 September 2006) was the report by Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in North Korea.
