9 May 2008: Update Report on Building Sustainable Peace: Post-Conflict Stabilisation: On 20 May, the Council will take up a new British initiative on securing peace in post-conflict situations. The proposal was launched by Prime Minister Gordon Brown in the Security Council on 16 April 2008. The meeting will be chaired at the ministerial level by Foreign Secretary David Miliband, and participation of a number of countries that have recently emerged from conflict and the World Bank is expected. A Council statement is a possible outcome. It was unclear at press time whether this would be adopted at the debate or whether the debate would provide impetus for further discussion and negotiation on a statement. A concept paper by the UK was circulated on 2 May, and at press time, Council members were expecting a possible UK draft statement. Word Format • PDF Format
2 May 2008: Update Report on Somalia: Council members are currently negotiating two draft resolutions on Somalia. There are ongoing differences of view among members, and it is unclear when agreement will be reached on both drafts. The first draft, prepared by the UK, responds to the proposed strategy for Somalia recommended by the Secretary-General in his 14 March report. After an initial round of expert-level discussions, a second version of the draft was circulated on Wednesday, 30 April. The second resolution, prepared by France, the US, the UK and Panama, addresses piracy issues. Word format • PDF format
